Ms Mathews was a renowned jurist and trailblazer for women in the law both in Australia and internationally. She was the first woman appointed to full judicial office in NSW and served as District Court judge between 1980 and 1987 before being appointed to the Supreme Court of NSW. Justice Mathews spent almost seven years as the state's only female Supreme Court judge before becoming a judge of the Federal Court of Australia.

In 2005 she was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for service to the judiciary, to the legal profession, to the University of NSW, and to music.

Special thanks to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Australia Ensemble UNSW for their performances in celebration of Ms Mathews’ love of classical music.
