Tobacco smoking is the largest cause of preventable death and disease in Australia. It increases the risk of cancer, as well as various heart and lung diseases, and is estimated to cause over 6,600 deaths in NSW alone each year. One in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit, with a third of those deaths occurring in middle age.
