About us

The Behavioural Insights Unit (BIU) works across the NSW Government helping to improve the effectiveness of public services and policy by applying what we know about the way people think and act.

BIU sits within the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet and was established in 2012. We:

  • run major trials, provide policy advice and support NSW government agencies that are running their own behavioural trials and interventions

  • build the capability of the NSW public sector to apply BI through training, resources, and hosting events with leading thinkers and practitioners

  • contribute to the global body of BI evidence by collaborating with academia and publishing NSW trial results.

We continue to be supported by the UK Behavioural Insights Team and we are increasingly collaborating with international and Australian academics on projects.

Our approach

Our work is collaborative and driven by evidence. We work with government agencies and partner organisations to understand the problem, design solutions and then trial interventions to help identify what works.

Our partners

All our projects are run in partnership with NSW government agencies or partner organisations. We combine our knowledge of behavioural insights with the partner’s knowledge of the issue they are dealing with and work collaboratively to develop and trial potential solutions. Our approach also includes spending time in the field and trying to understand services from the perspective of users and frontline workers, as well as consulting with leading academics and experts.

We have partnered with:

  • NSW Ministry of Health

  • NSW Department of Transport

  • NSW Department of Justice

  • NSW Department of Planning and Environment

  • NSW Department of Industry, Skills and Regional Development

  • NSW Office of State Revenue

  • Department of Education.
