People and communities

Communities are unique

People and communities are different. It's those differences that makes them unique.

Communities are different because of their history, where they are, what they do and what they want for themselves. They build what they need and make themselves strong based on their uniqueness. It is the role of government to assist them in doing that.

Building a community

People differ in size, in age, in colour and in race. Even though they are different, people come together in their community; they share ambitions and dreams to make their community strong. There are many things that help them do that such as skill, knowledge, talent, history and culture.

One of the earliest times people meet and understand each other is the classroom. Studying together in a classroom helps us to learn about what our classmates want, do and where they come from. The classroom is where we learn what is right and wrong, what we believe in and what we stand up for.

Classroom activity:

Find out more about the family history of the person sitting next to you.
Where do they come from?
How long has there family been in Australia?
What languages do they speak?
What things are important to them?

The peace garden

In Cabramatta, a school found out how unique it was. It built a garden of peace. The garden was made of words in all the different languages that were spoken at the school. By combining all these words, the school was able to build a space it wanted; a peaceful place to sit and relax and grow ideas.

What a great idea, maybe this is something that you might like to suggest to your school. Maybe you have an idea you'd like to share with us and other schools. Let us know, but first - remember to check out the be web smart section and ask a parent or teacher before sending an email.
