Older People

Principles

The NSW Government is committed to ensuring that older people are valued, lead independent lives and have the opportunity to participate fully in community life. It does this by:

  • promoting older people's independence with supportive living environments in their homes and their communities, and through high quality health care services
  • providing support for older people to pursue a range of lifestyle options including life-long learning, mature age employment, and secure retirement
  • helping to ensure older people are treated fairly and equitably, and are free from unlawful discrimination
  • acknowledging the diversity of older people, in gender, culture, language, geographical location and socio-economic circumstances, and addressing their diverse needs
  • identifying and supporting the unique needs of older Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people
  • recognising the increasing number and proportion of older people in the population, and planning and developing services and programs that are responsive to their needs, equitable and sustainable
  • encouraging and supporting older people to take action themselves to achieve their aspirations, and promoting consultation with older people on the decisions that impact on them.
Note: NSW ageing framework under development
A whole-of-government policy framework and action plan is currently being developed by the Office for Ageing in the NSW Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care to improve opportunities for older people to remain as independent and healthy as possible. It will identify achievements and initiatives in relation to:
  • supportive and inclusive neighbourhoods and communities
  • consumer protection, information and advice
  • health and lifestyle choices.

Note: Age discrimination
Both the NSW Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 and the Commonwealth Age Discrimination Act 2004 make discrimination on the basis of age unlawful in certain circumstances, which include the provision of goods and services, employment and education.

Complaints of discrimination
The NSW Anti-Discrimination Board investigates and conciliates complaints of discrimination which appear to involve a breach of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW). At the Commonwealth level, the Age Discrimination Act 2004 (Cth) is also supported by a complaints-based system with a conciliation process facilitated by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission

In the first instance an agency should attempt to resolve a complaint of discrimination through its internal complaints handling system. For more information, see Complaint Handling.

Lead Agency and Further Help

The lead agency is the Department of Ageing, Disability and Home Care. However, your agency may have a policy or a person responsible. Refer to them first.
