Making It Our Business (MIOB) Consultations

Improving the attraction, development and retention of Aboriginal people in the NSW Public Sector

Sacred Meeting Medicine Leaf - by Jeremy DevittOn 27 February 2009, the Department of Premier and Cabinet, in partnership with the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, held four concurrent forums on MIOB. The Forums were held in Sydney, Dubbo, Lismore and Wagga Wagga.

The target groups for the consultation forums were Aboriginal employees, the supervisors of Aboriginal employees and Human Resource Managers in the NSW Public Sector. The response to the Forums was extraordinary, with 270 people attending forums across the state and over 200 completing on-line surveys.

The intent of MIOB is to increase Aboriginal employment, professional learning and career development opportunities within the NSW public sector. MIOB’s key results areas are: Recruitment, Skills Acquisition, Retention and Cultural Education.

The Department of Premier and Cabinet invited employees to participate in the consultation process by sharing ideas for practical actions and good practices to advance MIOB into its next phase – an action plan to improve the attraction, skills acquisition, career development and retention of Aboriginal people in the NSW Public Sector.

All managers were urged to support staff from the target groups to participate in the consultations, whether by attending a forum or completing the online Consultation Survey. Those staff who were not able to attend forums were invited to watch the opening and closing presentations via our webcast and/or contribute ideas online through the Consultation Survey. The survey closed on 20 March 2009.

Input from the forums and surveys is now being collated and will be used to inform the MIOB Action Plan. Updates on the progress of the Action Plan will be provided to the sector.

Department of Premier and Cabinet would like to sincerely thank all those people who participated in the consultation process, and the agencies that supported their staff to attend the forums. The input from all participants is very much appreciated and vital to the advancement of MIOB across the NSW public sector.
