Workforce Profile

The NSW Public Sector Workforce Profile (WP) commenced in 1999 as a tool to be used at both the 'agency' and 'whole of sector' level for:

  • workforce planning
  • benchmarking
  • forecasting and costing human resources
  • assessing policy and strategy development needs
  • assessing the impact of new policies and procedures.

The Workforce Profile consists of a regular collection of anonymous data on the characteristics of NSW public sector employment and includes data on:

  • job characteristics (such as employment category, remuneration and leave)
  • individual characteristics (such as gender and age) and
  • the change (or movement) in these characteristics.

All agencies within the NSW public sector participate in the data collection, including State Owned Corporations and Government Trading Enterprises. Collections have been undertaken annually since 1999.

Workforce Profile was developed to address the needs of major stakeholders and maximise compatibility with payroll and personnel systems. The data collection was developed following extensive consultation with central and line agencies and key stakeholders including public sector unions and human resource systems providers. To ensure compatibility with existing data standards, advice was also sought from the Australian Bureau of Statistics and from other public sector jurisdictions.

The Workforce Profile is managed by the Public Sector Workforce Office (PSWO) in the Department of Premier and Cabinet.
