Temps and Casuals

The Temporary Employment provisions (Parts 2.4 - Public Sector Employment and Management Act 2002) commenced on 15 December 2003.

The Casual Employee provisions (Parts 2.6 - Public Sector Employment and Management Act 2002) are to commence on 12 April 2004. (related Circulars 2004-08, 2004-01)

Commentary and Guidelines on the employment of temporaries and casuals have been developed in consultation with agencies and unions. The documents developed are general commentary on the employment of temporaries and casuals and 4 appendices:

• Guidelines for Re-Employing Persons in Departments to carry out Work on a Temporary Basis Appendix 1-1.
• Guidelines for Employing Persons in a Department to Carry Out Work on a Casual Basis Appendix 1-2.
• Decision Process for the Employment of Staff Categories - Appendix 1-3.
• Sample Documents and Letters - Appendix 1-4.

The provisions only apply to Public Service Departments.
