There are many different allowances available to employees depending on the work they perform and circumstances in which it is performed.

Community Language Allowance Scheme
Employees, other than interpreters and translators, who may be called upon to use their language skills (including sign language) during the course of their work may be eligible for this allowance.

First Aid Allowances
Staff members appointed as First Aid Officers are entitled to an allowance and must have a St John's Ambulance Certificate or equivilent.

Higher Duties Allowance
This allowance may apply to employees who are required to 'act' in a higher position for a period of at least 5 days. It does not apply where a person has been 'Appointed to act' in a vacant position under the provisions of section 24 of the Public Sector Management and Employment Act 2002.

Home Office Allowance
This allowance applies where there is no departmental office in a particular location and an employee is asked to use a room in their home as an official office for the Department.

Home Telephone subsidy
This allowance is also called the Semi Official Telephone Allowance and applies where staff are required to be contactable out of hours to deal with emergencies and other work responsibilities.

Living Away from Home Allowances and Travel Allowances
Employees required to travel other than to their normal work location may be eligible for various allowances. Entitlements also cover accommodation costs.
