Merit Selection

Merit selection ensures that all eligible members of the community have a fair chance to gain a job with the Government. Selection is based only on a person's ability to perform the work. The best person is selected, resulting in a quality Public Sector workforce capable of effectively designing and delivering services and programs to the people of NSW.

The principles of merit selection are detailed in the Merit selection guide for NSW Public Sector panels - picking the best person for the job.

The Government also has an equal employment opportunity policy. This is about giving employment access to all members of the community and not discriminating against an applicant because they belong to a particular group under the Anti-Discrimination Act. See EEO for more information about EEO groups, exemptions under the Anti-Discrimination Act and overseas qualifications.
