Working in NSW

Approximately one third of the Australian labour force works in NSW. Legislation protects this labour force and enhances the working life of employees and employers.

The Industrial Relations Act 1996 is the principal legislation that covers workers in NSW. The other Acts that cover NSW workers include the Annual Holidays Act 1944 and the Long Service Leave Act 1955. The Office of Industrial Relations is responsible for educating and informing the labour market of their rights and responsibilities covered by this legislation.

Serving NSW

A considerable percentage of the NSW labour force serves the public through Government departments or by supporting Government Ministers. Some examples of the services provided are:

  • protecting natural resources and cultural assets (e.g. Department of Environment and Climate Change and Arts NSW)
  • maintaining public order and safety (e.g. NSW Police and the Department of Corrective Services) and providing infrastructure (eg RailCorp, the Roads and Traffic Authority, and State Transit Authority)
  • promoting social justice (e.g. the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and the Community Relations Commission) developing the market and promoting economic development in NSW (the Department of State and Regional Development)
  • services to the public (e.g. NSW Health and Department of Education and Training)

This website and the NSW Government jobs.nsw site assist people to find employment in the Public Sector.
